    • Description of the research thematic of team 04:

In the debate on the city, the idea of building “the city on the city” is the basis of any urban intervention nowadays; whatever are the sites or the dates of the districts concerned. In this context, work on preserved buildings is the essential component of urban projects. On the plan of constructive economy, building conversions generally offer significant cost savings, provided that certain conditions are met, including mainly the adequacy of their new function and existing form. How to value land and immovable potentials of industrial or agricultural wastelands embedded within the fabric of the city of Algiers such as in the districts of El-Hamma, Hussein Dey or El-Harrach that have became new urban centers? The requalification of the industrial heritage of Algiers will be held through an innovative and visible project that will likely stimulate a new dynamic of development and value creation. As for the question of the requalification of an old or colonial urban fabric, it will be approached in its entirety. Beyond the architectural expressions that will be identified, this project will encompass the urban functionality of neighborhoods or parts of cities by trying to find the interdependencies, the economic and travel logics as well as the elements of urbanity that underlie the frame of the lands and its servicing while considering the different types in order to create a national repertoire with regard to its requalification. This approach will make it possible to grasp the peculiarities of the tissues and the meanings of ancient cores from their genesis and in their evolution: what are then, the survivals and the disappeared functionalities? How were urban logics built? What are the attraction poles? What are the developments cycles? This urban approach of a significant sample of an ancient cores, houses, buildings and blocks, in connection with the urban frame of belonging will make it possible to include requalification and rehabilitation in a program of revitalization and innovative approach by implementing urban interconnections in a given region; such as: Miliana, Medea, Cherchell, Khangat Sidi Nagi, Sidi Okba, Temacine. The research will cover aspects such as: urban rehabilitation as a concept of development, rehabilitation and conversion of abandoned immovable potential (wastelands and urban farms in addition to the innovative urban project in pre-existing fabrics, cataloguing urban typologies, cataloguing architectural typologies), developing teaching programs and research topics related to the reality of the field.
